Cooperative Month Celebration Commenced! Mother Rita MPC joins the nation in the celebration of National Cooperative Month In a spirited celebration, Mother Rita Multi-Purpose Cooperative (MPC) commemorated National Cooperative Month alongside its Main Office's 17th year anniversary last October 4, 2024. The event took place in the cooperative's Audio Visual Room in Lauis, Candelaria, bringing together members and community stakeholders to honor nearly two decades of service and cooperation. National Cooperative Month is celebrated every October to recognize the vital contributions of cooperatives to economic development and social welfare. This year’s theme, “Cooperatives: Stronger Together Today for a Brighter Tomorrow,” emphasizes the strength and unity of cooperatives in building sustainable communities. The festivities began with an energetic morning motorcade, featuring members of Mother Rita MPC and local residents, all showcasing their commitment to cooperative values. Following the parade, attendees gathered for a heartfelt thanksgiving mass, reflecting on the cooperative’s journey and its impact on the community. In a collaborative effort with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the cooperative hosted the BSP Piso Caravan, aimed at promoting financial literacy and responsible money management. The event also marked the official launch of the cooperative month celebration, along with a presentation of BSP's “Know Your Money” program. Mr. Mark Jason A. Cagalingan, Deputy Director of the BSP Pampanga branch, led the team as Ms. Ma. Lourdes Laconsay presented the “Know Your Money” program. She shared important tips on how to validate money to ensure it can be exchanged during the PISO Caravan. Ms. Michelle Anne Sicat and Mr. Francis Renier Banting also supported the session with their expertise. The celebration concluded with a special address from Ms. Rowena Pastor, the invited speaker for the anniversary event. Her inspiring message underscored the achievements of Mother Rita MPC and highlighted the importance of unity and cooperation in reaching common goals. As a proud Currency Exchange Partner with the BSP, Mother Rita MPC is committed to promoting financial inclusivity and literacy among its members. A highlight of the event was the pledge of commitment, marking the official start of Mother Rita MPC’s role as a Currency Exchange Partner (CEP) of BSP. The cooperative looks forward to continuing its mission of uplifting the community through education, support, and sustainable practices. With a spirit of celebration and a strong commitment to cooperation, Mother Rita MPC is excited to embark on another successful year, enhancing its role as a vital support system for its members and the greater community. All about cooperative operation. Its Principles and Values. Understanding the Power of Collective Action What is Cooperative? Cooperative is an autonomous and duly registered association of persons, with a common bond of interest, who have voluntarily joined together to achieve their social, economic, and cultural need and aspirations by making equitable contributions to the capital required, patronizing their product and services and accepting a fair share of risk and benefits of the undertaking in accordance with universally accepted cooperative principles. (RA 9520 Article 3) Cooperative Member-owned and operated, with each member having equal voting rights. Mission-driven, prioritizing the welfare of members over profits. Decisions are made democratically, ensuring all members have a voice. Focus on community development, mutual aid, and shared benefits. Big Business Large-scale operations with significant market influence. Profit-driven with shareholders as primary beneficiaries. Hierarchical structure with centralized decision-making. Focus on maximizing revenue and growth. Small Business Independently owned and operated, with limited scale. Profit-driven but typically serves local or niche market Owner(s) make decisions and manage day-to-day operations. Personal relationships with customers; flexible business practices Fair Share of Risks and Benefits According to Global Cooperative Principles COOP Members Own the Cooperative Every member has ownership and equal rights in the cooperative, contributing to its decision-making and direction. COOP Business Owned by Members The cooperative's business activities and assets belong to the members, ensuring that they have a direct stake in the organization's success. Business Output/Performance is Shared Whether it's profit or loss, the outcome of the cooperative's operations is shared among the members based on their participation. The Rise and Fall of the Cooperative Depends on its Members The success and sustainability of the cooperative rely on the active involvement and responsibility of its members. Cooperative Values Ethical Values Self-Help (Pagtulong sa Sarili) Self-Responsibility (Responsibilidad sa Sarili) Democracy (Pagiging Malaya/Demokrasya) Equality (Pagkakapantay-pantay) Equity (Katarungan) Solidarity (Pagkakaisa) Social Values Honesty (Katapatan) Openness (Pagiging Bukas na Isipan) Social Responsibility (Responsibilidad sa Lipunan) Caring for Others (Malasakit sa kapwa) 7 Cooperative Principles The Mother Rita Multipurpose Cooperative operates under the globally recognized cooperative principles that guide our mission of empowerment, community development, and mutual benefit. Voluntary and Open Membership Membership is open to all individuals who are willing to accept the responsibilities of being a member, regardless of their social, political, racial, or religious background. This principle ensures inclusivity and equal opportunity for everyone to participate and benefit from the cooperative. Joining is entirely voluntary, and members have the freedom to choose their level of involvement, while also enjoying the shared benefits and responsibilities that come with being part of a cooperative community. Democratic Member Control Members play an active role in the decision-making process. The cooperative operates democratically, with each member having equal voting rights, regardless of their financial contribution. Major decisions, including policies and leadership elections, are made by members, ensuring that the cooperative is governed by the collective will of its people. This principle fosters transparency, accountability, and member-driven leadership, empowering everyone to have a say in the cooperative’s direction. Member Economic Participation Members contribute equitably to the capital of the cooperative and have a direct stake in its financial well-being. This includes participating in decisions on how the cooperative's profits (surpluses) are used or distributed. Members typically receive a fair return on their contributions and decide collectively whether profits should be reinvested into the cooperative, used for member services, or distributed among members. This principle ensures that the cooperative’s financial benefits are shared among those who contribute and participate actively. Autonomy and Independence Mother Rita MPC operates as an autonomous, self-governing organization. While cooperatives may enter into agreements with other organizations or receive external support, they remain independent and are controlled by their members. This principle ensures that the cooperative's decisions, policies, and operations are made by its members without external interference, safeguarding the integrity of the cooperative and ensuring that it continues to serve the interests of its members. Education, Training and Information At Mother Rita Multipurpose Cooperative, we believe that continuous learning is essential to the success of our members and the cooperative. We provide education and training to our members, elected leaders, and staff to enhance their skills, knowledge, and understanding of cooperative principles. Additionally, we ensure that all members are well-informed about the cooperative’s activities, benefits, and opportunities. This empowers members to actively participate in decision-making, contribute to the cooperative’s growth, and maximize the benefits of their membership. Cooperation among Cooperatives Mother Rita Multipurpose Cooperative actively fosters collaboration with other cooperatives at local, national, and international levels. By working together, we strengthen the cooperative movement and enhance the collective impact of our efforts. This principle promotes sharing of resources, knowledge, and best practices among cooperatives, allowing us to support one another, tackle common challenges, and leverage opportunities for mutual benefit. Through such cooperation, we contribute to the overall growth and effectiveness of the cooperative sector. Concern for Community Mother Rita Multipurpose Cooperative is committed to the sustainable development and well-being of the communities we serve. We focus on addressing local needs and supporting initiatives that improve the quality of life for our members and their communities. This principle drives us to implement policies and programs that contribute to the overall health, education, and economic development of the areas we operate in. Our goal is to create a positive impact and build resilient, thriving communities through active engagement and support. Mother Rita Multi-Purpose Cooperative Company Profile. Its Mission, Vision, Shared Values, and Metaphor. A Foundation of Compassion and Service The Legacy of Mother Rita Barcelo y Pages Born in Spain, Mother Rita Barcelo y Pages was a devoted member of the Augustinian Recollect Sisters, whose mission of service brought her to the Philippines. In the midst of the cholera pandemic of 1882, she became a beacon of hope and compassion. During this devastating outbreak, Mother Rita led her Sisters in caring for the sick, providing food, medical assistance, and spiritual comfort to the afflicted. Her unwavering dedication in the face of such adversity cemented her reputation as a selfless leader committed to serving the most vulnerable. The Mother Rita Multipurpose Cooperative draws its inspiration from her mission during this pandemic. Founded on her values of compassion and service, the cooperative aims to support its members through financial aid, livelihood programs, and community services—continuing her legacy of empowering and uplifting communities in times of crisis. In 1991, the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo unleashed torrents of lahar, bringing hardship and uncertainty to the people of Zambales and nearby provinces. What once seemed like a destructive force eventually revealed its hidden value. Lahar became a vital resource for construction, agriculture, and craftsmanship, transforming the landscape into one of opportunity and growth. From Ashes to Abundance: A Cooperative's Journey Mother Rita Multi-Purpose Cooperative (MPC) is like the lahar—initially overlooked but now a cornerstone of strength and resilience in Zambales and beyond. Just as lahar enriched the land, Mother Rita MPC enriches the lives of its members, cultivating a community where resources and opportunities flourish. M other Rita MPC was formally registered on February 18, 1992 with the Cooperative Development Authority as a Multi-Purpose Cooperative headed by Mother Leontina Castillo, OSA and the Augustinian Sisters of our Lady of Consolation sent to Candelaria, Zambales for a mission. The Earlier members of the COOP were the victims of Mt. Pinatubo eruption who fled from Olongapo to San Narsiso who decided to settle in the Mother Rita Resettlement Area, Barangay Yamot, Candelaria, Zambales. Over time, membership has increased from the towns of Candelaria, Masinloc and Sta. Cruz. January 16, 2008, Nagbunga Branch was opened in Northern Zambales to spread throughout the province the “Vision” and “Mission” of Mother Rita MPC. Currently, Mother Rita MPC is registered under the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) with the registration number 9520-03002384. The Main Office Building is located at Lauis, Candelaria, Zambales, the Branch Offices in San Guillermo, San Marcelino, Zambales, Palanginan, Iba Zambales and its satellite offices in Sta.
